    Flavors From Miso Butter

If you enjoy miso soup, you're going to love the layers of flavor in this butter. The deep umami flavor from miso paste combined with buttery richness wakes up our usual dinner routine.

Miso paste is a versatile ingredient that is a staple in Japanese cooking. So, if you're a fan of Japanese food in general, there is a good chance you will love this compound butter.

What Kind of Miso To Use

There are a few different types of miso paste to choose from: yellow miso, red miso, and white miso paste. The longer the miso paste is fermented, the darker the color and more intense the flavor. Darker miso = more intensity. So the type of miso paste you choose will be the main difference in how intense your butter is. I tend to go middle of the road and love yellow miso paste the most.

    Simple Ingredients

two sticks butter on white plate glass bowls of soy sauce, miso paste and lemon cut in half

We only need 4 ingredients to make this easy recipe. Softened butter is much easier to work with here, so make sure to take it out of the fridge a few hours ahead of time.

    • Unsalted Butter
    • White or Yellow Miso Paste
    • Soy Sauce
    • Lemon Juice

How to Make and Store Compound Butter

In a large bowl, combine room temperature butter with your miso paste. Mix thoroughly with a hand mixer or rubber spatula until the creamy butter mixture is well combined.

Always save leftover miso butter in an airtight container and keep it refrigerated for longer storage. It will last up to the expiration date on the miso container.

You can also shape your compound miso butter in a log. Start by laying out a piece of plastic wrap on your countertop. Dollop the miso butter into a log 5-6 long. Fold the plastic wrap over the miso butter and hold both ends. Roll the plastoc wrap over the counter until butter forms a uniform log. Fold the edges ovder and store in the refrigerator for later use.

    Ways to Use Miso Butter

There are several different ways to use miso butter. One of my favorite ways is to use with green vegetables like green beans or broccoli, fresh corn, or a baked potato. It also works really well with roasted sweet potatoes because it cuts through the sweetness.

It's also an excellent topping for steak, pork tenderloin, or salmon.

Lastly, miso butter is a simple addition to homemade garlic bread or add a dollop to hot noodles and toss to combine.

One of my favorite things is a Miso Butter Sauce for steak or pork. Becuase of the body we get from the thick paste, it makes a really smooth and delicious sauce for our protein.
