What to Serve with Miso Sauce
The first time I had this sauce was at Jean Georges Steakhouse in the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas. When you order a steak there, 4 sauces are served with your main dish. The soy miso sauce was by far my favorite and I had to make it at home.
It's a great sauce for steak but also works really well for pork chops, pork tenderloin, and grilled salmon. The thick paste that creates the body of this sauce is full of flavor and builds a smooth dipping sauce.
Kinds if Miso Paste
Miso paste is made from fermented paste made from soy beans, salt, and rice koji.
When you head to buy your miso paste, there are few different types of miso you might find in grocery stores. The darker red miso and a lighter white miso paste. The darker version spends more time in the fermentation process causing it darken. Because of the extra time fermenting, it has a more intense flavor. They yellow miso and white miso have a milder flavor and lighter color.
Simple Miso Steak Sauce Ingredients

Miso paste is the main ingredient to this sauce. We are combining it with a few other Asian flavors for a balanced and bright sauce. These simple ingredients and quick cook time will have your delicious sauce on the table in no time.
- ¼ cup miso paste
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger
- 1 garlic clove
- ¼ teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoon unsalted butter
Since there is plenty of salty flavor in the miso paste, low sodium soy sauce is definitely the way to go with this recipe.
How to Make Miso Sauce
- Measure all of your ingredients before you begin. Mince the clove of garlic and grate the ginger.
- Set a small sauce pot over low heat.
- Combine all of the ingredients except for the butter in the pan and stir it well. It will take some time for the miso paste to soften and fully incorporate with the other ingredients.
- One the mixture has come together and the garlic and ginger are fragrant, turn off the heat. For an extra smooth sauce, push the sauce through a strainer.
- Transfer the smooth sauce back to the pan and turn the heat on to medium low.
- Add ½ tablespoon pf butter to the sauce and stir it in well. After the first portion of butter has melted and incorporated completely, repeat until all of the butter is added.
- Remove from the heat and serve immediately.
Serving Soy Miso Sauce

One of my favorite ways to serve this homemade miso sauce in a small bowl on the side. You can also spoon some of the sauce directly over the steak or pork for a beautiful presentation.

Saving Leftover Sauce and Reheating
Refrigerate: Transfer any leftover sauce to an airtight container and refrigerate for up 4 days. I like to use these small glass jars but a mason jar is another good option.
Freezing: Allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and gently rewarm on the stove before use.
When you are ready to use the leftovers you have two choices. First, the microwave on a reheat setting for 30 seconds and stir. Be careful. The sauce can separate or burn if overheated. The other option is to reheat back in a small sauce pan on low until it loosens up for ya.
Recipe Modifications
Substitute for rice vinegar: if you don't have rice vinegar, you can also use lime juice or lemon juice. The sauce needs some sort of acid to cut through the salty flavor.
