This blood orange margarita recipe brings bright and refreshing flavor with beautiful blood orange juice and bold tequila. Every occasion deserves special cocktail recipes and this one is perfect for Cinco de Mayo.

We are taking a good margarita and making it exceptional with fresh juice from one of my favorite citrus fruits. Blood oranges have an amazing color and much more flavor than your regular navel orange. If you are already a margarita fan, this one will make you oh so happy.

    What Tequila should I use?

The best tequila is whatever kind of tequila you love. I am partial to darker tequilas because of their flavor like reposado tequila or añejo. However, for a tasty margarita that is bright and refreshing we need something a little lighter.

Blanco tequila is my go-to for this recipe. Silver tequila is totally fine if you are making margaritas for a crowd.

    Where to Get Blood Oranges

Since blood oranges can sometimes be hard to find, start by going to Whole Foods or Sprouts Farmers Market. I have had the best luck finding fresh oranges there.

    Simple Fresh Ingredients

One great thing about cocktails is the simple ingredients.

    • Favorite tequila blanco
    • Fresh Squeezed blood orange juice
    • grand marnier (or another orange liqueur like triple sec or Cointreau)
    • lime juice
    • fresh ice

For the garnish and rim of the glass, I love turbinado sugar and orange slices.

Optional: if the blood orange juice isn't especially sweet you can add a dash of agave nectar but make sure to test the juice first because it may be sweet enough on its own.

    How to Shake Your Margarita

Into the cup of a cocktail shaker add the tequila, blood orange juice, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur and lots of ice.

    Great Garnishes

Before you shake up your blood orange margarita, prepare the glasses.

    1. Moisten the rim of your glass by taking a lime wedge or orange wedge around the top.
    2. Using a small plate, sprinkle a generous layer of turbinado sugar or margarita salt. Dip the moistened rim of your glass into the sugar or salt.
    3. Add the ice to the glass and now you are ready to pour your prepared cocktail over the ice once it is ready.

If you want more than just a salty flavor on your rim, you can do a sugar and salt combination, add tajin a bright hit.

If Blood Oranges Aren't in Season

If fresh blood oranges aren't in season, I have a solution for you. I get this Blood orange syrup from Amazon and I love the flavor. Use a combination of 2 ounces of juice from regular oranges with 1 teaspoon of the blood orange syrup.

Blood orange season runs from October to April, so about of the year they should be available.

Other orange options during citrus season are cara cara oranges and Valencia.
