How Chocolatey Can We Make This Milkshake
There's nothing better than a delicious milkshake at home in your pjs while watching a great show or playing games as a family. My kids love to make over the top milkshakes with a fun candy rim, extra chocolate sauce to line the inside of the cup, and add crushed candy on the whipped cream. These extras take us Fromm a good milkshake to a great milkshake!
The Basic Milkshake Ingredients
I bet you already have the simple ingredients on hand to make a basic chocolate milkshake.
- Vanilla Ice Cream
- Chocolate Sauce
- Cold Milk
These are the most common ingredients used, especially at restaurants. I think we can do better though.
Let's Turn Up The Volume On The Chocolate Shake

Time to put the CHOCOLATE in this shake and take it to the next level. If you don't already these items on hand, lets get these in your next grocery order or make a plan to grab them from the local grocery store asap!
I'm making this a double chocolate milkshake. Stick with me for lots of ideas to make your family ask for more.
- Chocolate ice cream
- whole milk
- chocolate sauce OR hot fudge
- whipped cream
- mini chocolate chocolate chips, chocolate sprinkles or chocolate shavings
Flavors To Add To Our Chocolate Shake
We can add flavors to this perfect milkshake and make it special every time. You can use syrups or combinations of ice cream to change it up. You can also line the glass with fun and pretty sauces which is aways a crowd pleaser with my family.
Make it half and half with a combo of vanilla ice cream (an option if you're not as chocolate crazy as I am)
Line the glass with caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or strawberry sauce.
Fun Milkshake Toppings

Whipped cream and maraschino cherries are classic milkshake toppings, but what else is there?
Chocolate Whipped Cream- oh buddy! Go for store bought or make some by combining 1 cup heavy cream with ¼ cup granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.

How Thick Do You Want It?
It's pretty easy to make a milkshake exactly as thick as you want it- just add more or less milk.
For a thicker milkshake, you may need to blend for 20-30 seconds and then use a spatula to scrape down the sides and then blend some more.
Making Your Milkshake Look Amazing

After you make the milkshake, you can make the presentation extra special too. Start with a drizzle of chocolate syrup to line the glass.
I also like to line the rim with some hot fudge or chocolate syrup and dip that in chocolate shavings. Kind of like a margarita getting rimmed with salt.
Now, go ahead and pour your perfectly creamy milkshake in your glass, top with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips.
Milkshake Recipe Modifications
- use your favorite crushed up candy bars as a topping
- if you find it, use chocolate whipped cream from the grocery instead of regular
- add a scoop of peanut butter if you love that perfect balance of chocolate and peanut butter flavor. Top the shake with crushed up reeses pb cups.
- malt powder is another fun addition that used to be popular in a traditional ice cream shop back in the day

Helpful Supplies and Serving
All you really need is a basic blender and tall glasses. I do think special serving glasses and extra wide straws make the experience better though.
I also recently bought a new ice cream scoop that works wonders on ice cream straight from the freezer!
